Pride & Perjudice
Two lovers have to overcome pride, for the female hero, and prejudice, for the male hero, before being together. When first he meets her, he refuses her company, for he finds her very common and not handsome [*pretty]. He has not tried to hide his motives from her. Her pride gets hurt. But it is not long before the man falls in love with her. His prejudice holds him back from disclosing his love for her. Even when he proposes marriage for the first time, his prejudice is still tangible. The conclusion of that story does not end at the first marriage proposal for she refuses it. As the story continues, his prejudice disappears and, only when her pride is overcome, does she consent to marry him.
